Iraqi Election Date Set March 6, 2010

Prasaja.web.id - Iraq's presidency council set March 6 as the date for parliamentary elections next year, and not February 27 as widely expected, officials said Tuesday.

General elections will occur at a crucial moment for Iraq once since the country emerging from war sectarian attacks triggered by the U.S. in 2003 and preparing for U.S. troops to leave the country in late 2011.

Naseer al-Ani, chief of staff of President Jalal Talabani, said the date was chosen in a meeting between the council presidency and electoral authorities.

"After consultation we agreed that the best time to conduct the election is March 6, to include consideration of religious ceremonies," Faraj al-Haidari, head of an independent electoral commission, explained to reporters.

"All agreed that this (March 6) is the best date," said Haidar.

Iraqi elections will come should have been held at the end of January according to the constitution, but laws are needed to be done pending the election because of political disputes protracted.

Shia and Sunni groups opposed to the election closer to the celebration of Arbain, which stretch until mid-February. Thousands of Shia people are expected to walk to the holy city of Kerbala from all regions in Iraq on the big day.
